Finance guru: Man City may bank new Uefa payout as £917m-a-year deal on the line

Man City could bank more cash from the central Uefa pot if the governing body scraps its deal with TEAM Marketing.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the future of Uefa’s alliance with TEAM.

TEAM have acted as an intermediary on Uefa’s behalf when negotiating new commercial and broadcast deals for every territory except the United States.

They helped broker the latest £917million-a-year UK Champions League TV deal, for example.

But Sport Business reported earlier this month (10 August) that the partnership is under threat as Uefa wants to bring their commercial operations in-house.

Plumley explained how the money Uefa currently pays to the marketing agency would be distributed if the arrangement is scrapped.

“There is a couple of things in the mix here,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“If Uefa wants to do this themselves, it will be about reducing costs and cutting out the middle man. They will currently be paying a fee to TEAM Marketing.

“They may also feel that they themselves can get the same price that TEAM are currently negotiating on their behalf.

“If both of these things happen, how much of that extra saving will go back into the Champions League pot for distribution? That is when the likes of Man City will benefit.

“If Uefa up the prize money, City will see some extra revenue. If it’s a cost-cutting exercise, things will remain as they are.”
