Man City could replace Riyad Mahrez this summer after journalist’s update – Robinson

Paul Robinson has claimed Man City could afford to lose Riyad Mahrez this summer so long as an adequate replacement is “ready to come in.”

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one insisted the 31-year-old “is not irreplaceable” despite scoring “some important goals.”

Mahrez has just 12 months remaining on his contract at the Etihad.

According to the Mirror‘s Simon Mullock (4 June), City would be tempted to cash in on the Algeria international if the right offer was to arrive.

Raheem Sterling is also just a year away from his deal expiring.

When asked by Football Insider whether City could afford to lose Mahrez this summer, Robinson said: “As good as Mahrez has been, a squad needs rejuvenating at times.

“Guardiola does like to bring in new players and he integrates players very well.

“Mahrez has been a top player for Man City. He has scored some important goals and if they are to let him go, it will be about what replaces him and comes in behind him.

“He is not as important as say a Kevin De Bruyne. He is not irreplaceable.

“But you do not want to lose him unless you have a player ready to come in who is of the same level.”

Mahrez was one of City’s standout performers in the 2021-22 campaign.

He contributed 24 goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.
