Man City could U-turn on Serge Gnabry after Sky transfer update – Robinson

Paul Robinson has suggested Man City could turn their attentions to Serge Gnabry once Raheem Sterling completes a move to Chelsea.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed Pep Guardiola has “more then enough” at his disposal without Sterling, 27.

According to Sky Sports (7 July), confirmation of the England international’s transfer to Stamford Bridge is imminent.

Sterling is said to have agreed personal terms with Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead of a £50million move to the London club.

Manchester Evening News journalist Simon Bajkowski claimed (4 July) that City currently have no intention of signing Bayern Munich forward Gnabry as Sterling’s replacement.

Gnabry could be set to leave the Bundesliga champions this summer, with his contract into its final 12 months.

When asked by Football Insider if City could U-turn on signing Gnabry, Robinson said: “Maybe.

“City have more than enough to cope without Sterling.

“It just depends what size squad the manager wants. If Sterling goes it leaves a place in the squad. It gives Guardiola the option to bring in another player in that area.

“If they lost Sterling and went with what they had, would they be weaker? It would be debatable.

“Sterling scored a lot of goals last season but the manager didn’t pick him in the bigger games. I don’t think it would cause them a problem if they didn’t replace him.

“Gnabry is a player who would fit the bill. He gives you a similar goal output to Sterling. He is a like-for-like player.

“I’m sure they would look at him.

“Would Man City be at a big loss if they did not sign a replacement though? I’m not sure because they have go so much quality in that squad.”
