Man City face ‘serious’ punishment amid ‘disgraceful’ behind-the-scenes claim – expert

The investigation over financial misconduct at Man City has entered its fifth year and the worst-case scenario for the club looks to be a considerable fine.

That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the possible punishments awaiting Man City when their financial investigation finally comes to an end.

An investigation into the reigning Premier League champions was launched following a series of leaked emails from German outlet Der Spiegel in 2018.

The Premier League took charge of the financial misconduct investigation and appointed two experts to the “ultra-secretive” case.

But with the investigation now entering its fifth year, The Times reported last Friday (6 January) that one senior figure claimed the saga is damaging the English game and labelled the delays “disgraceful”.

Plumley insists that the Premier League will find it increasingly difficult to punish Man City the longer the investigation rumbles on.

“You always want greater transparency from the outside looking in.” Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“We know very little about what has gone on in the background at Man City and what has been investigated over the last five years.

“We’ve seen City win the battle against Uefa and the longer this goes, the harder it gets for any punishment to be handed out to the club.

“The idea of retrospective stripping of titles seems very unlikely, so the worst-case scenario is looking like a serious fine which City won’t be fazed by.

“The longer it goes the harder it is to penalize, so the Premier League need to wrap this issue up.”
