‘Man City get good news’ after shock Rodri injury twist
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted news of Man City registering Rodri for the Champions League knockout phase is not “wishful thinking”.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the move is a “surprising one”, but insisted Pep Guardiola won’t have made the decision “just to cheer him up”.
Rodri suffered a serious knee injury against Arsenal in September and was initially expected to be out for the remainder of this season.
However, he has publicly stated he hopes to return before the end of the 2024-25 campaign and The Telegraph claim (30 January) City are ready to register him for the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Guardiola’s side have dipped into the market to bring a new midfielder to the Etihad Stadium, signing Nico Gonzalez from Porto on deadline day (3 February).
The Premier League champions also signed Omar Marmoush, Victor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov in the January window.
Rodri registration is not ‘wishful thinking’ for Man City, says Wyness
When asked about Rodri’s inclusion in the squad, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “That is surprising – but it’s good news for City, brilliant, really.
“They obviously wouldn’t give up a space in the squad if there wasn’t a chance of him coming back this season.

“Let’s see. I don’t think it’s wishful thinking, they wouldn’t make that sort of statement just to cheer him up.
“Hopefully it can be good news for Rodri. We’re missing his quality in these games and it would be great if he could make an early return.”
