Man City have actually just spent ‘£200m’ on new signings – Stefan Borson
Manchester City signed four new players in the January transfer window after enduring a challenging first half of the campaign.
Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez all made the move to the Etihad, while Claudio Echeverri also joined the club after a deal was agreed in January 2024.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider they spent around £200million in the recent window once agents’ fees are included.
Man City face PSR issue after January spending spree
Borson insisted the heavy spending will impact the Premier League champions’ profit and sustainability (PSR) position moving forward.
Man City posted an English record revenue of £715million and a £74million profit for 2023-24, while their wage bill stood at £413million.
Borson revealed Kyle Walker’s loan move to AC Milan will slightly offset the club’s spending in the recent window.
He told Football Insider: “I think when you add in the ancillary costs and the agent costs, you are talking about £200million of spending.
“In terms of increasing the amortisation on the books going forward, that’s approximately £40million a year.
“It’s pretty significant and it is going to impact their overall PSR position going forward because it’s a big spend. But we will have to see what goes out on the other side.
“Clearly, they have made the saving on Kyle Walker going to Milan. From a wages perspective, that’s probably the best part of £5million until the end of the season.
“That will offset it slightly, but it’s four players and £40million of amortisation. Then if you include Claudio Echeverri, you have got additional wages as well.
“Clearly, the bulk of the Premier League spending was from City.”
Man City agreed big-money deals despite 115 charges case
Man City completed their January deals despite having the threat of their 115 charges case still looming over them, with the panel currently considering its verdict.
The Times reported on 3 February a transfer embargo is one of the sanctions the Manchester giants could face if they are found guilty of some of the charges.
Football Insider revealed on 25 January Man City’s spending was not in preparation for a transfer ban and was purely based around improving their squad.
Pep Guardiola’s side secured their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient on Saturday (8 February), while they sit fifth in the Premier League table.
