Finance guru: Man City have exploited ‘first-mover advantage’ as ‘next big thing’ announced
Man City have exploited “first-mover advantage” by getting on board with the metaverse in its infancy.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s relationship with the “next big thing” in the field of technology.
The 2021-22 Premier League champions announced a new partnership with gaming platform Roblox last Thursday (14 July).
The new tie-in promises to incorporate City into the metaverse, an online virtual reality space in which users can interact with one another.
City signed up with Sony in November last year in order to further their technological capacity to further their enter the metaverse.
Plumley claims that City’s latest foray into this corner of the cyber industry is low-risk, high-reward.
“It’s a good test the water exercise in a relatively risk-free market with very little financial consequence,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“But the power is that, if it does come off, you’re looking at growth in this area. Most analysts are predicting this to be the next big thing. I think it will take off at some point. It’s just a case of when.
“City are in a position to exploit that because of first-mover advantage. They can integrate it into everything they do. There’s a lot of profit to be had there.”

City are currently on a pre-season tour of the United States.
They begin their 2022-23 Premier League campaign away to West Ham on 7 August.
