Man City have suffered 'big blow' after Joao Cancelo development - Robinson

Paul Robinson has claimed Joao Cancelo’s suspension is “a big blow” for Man City ahead of their League Cup clash against Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested Aymeric Laporte or Nathan Ake will play at left-back in the 28-year-old’s absence.

Cancelo was sent off in Man City’s 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday (5 November).

The full-back will receive a one-game ban as a result of the straight red card.

Suspensions apply across all domestic competition so Cancelo will miss the visit of Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday (9 November).

When asked by Football Insider if the Portugal international’s absence will likely be costly, Robinson said: “Cancelo has been fantastic over the past couple of seasons.

“In my opinion, he is the best full-back in the league. He effects the game at both ends of the pitch.

“They have enough in their squad to cope though. Laporte or Ake will probably cover at left-back while he’s suspended.

“It will be a big blow for them because Cancelo is one of their best players.

“City will be desperate to beat Chelsea. They will want to get their hands on the League Cup. They have won it so many times before.”

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently second in the Premier League.

They welcome Bournemouth at the Etihad in the final game before the World Cup.
