‘Man City have the new Onana’ – Fans fume at ‘shambolic’ Ederson over Al Hilal shock

Man City supporters have ripped Ederson to shreds after the Brazilian’s role in their side’s shock Club World Cup defeat to Al Hilal.

The 31-year-old only missed the 6-0 win over Al-Ain during the group stage, with Stefan Ortega stepping up between the sticks, and fans felt far more comfortable with the German on the pitch.

Frustrations around the goalkeeper’s ability are nothing new for the Citizens, with Man City fans wanting Ederson sold following the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

He has racked up 372 appearances for the Blues since making the move from Benfica on a £35m deal in 2017 [Independent], often playing a key role at both ends of the pitch with eight assists in that time.

No goalkeeper has been able to take his No.1 spot over the eight seasons, but with errors continuing to creep into his game, fans are ready to move on this summer.

Ederson takes heavy criticism after Club World Cup fallout

There has been plenty of speculation around the shot-stopper’s future, with Mick Brown telling Football Insider that Man City want to sell Ederson in favour of Porto’s Diogo Costa.

Age, talent, experience. It all makes sense for the Citizens. And despite heavy links with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer, the player himself has already squashed the reports as rumours.

Mick Brown also told Football Insider that PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma was on the list for Pep Guardiola, but there have not been any moves for a replacement despite plenty of deals already being done.

While the Brazilian has been linked with a move away several times, the manager continues to back the player on the pitch, sometimes even blaming his own tactics for the goalkeeper’s errors.

Man City fans fume amid Man United comparisons

Now, fans have been quick to turn on Ederson following his awful display against Al Hilal, conceding four goals and making just two saves in the entire 120 minutes.

Some supporters have compared him to the “new Andre Onana” at Man United, with his goalkeeping labelled “shambolic” by another disgruntled fan watching the Club World Cup.

Football Insider understands that Man United are ready to part ways with Onana already, making far too many mistakes at Old Trafford, but City fans have had no trouble comparing the two on social media.
