Man City news: Pundit can’t believe ‘bizarre’ Erling Haaland news

Kevin Phillips has suggested the mega-money signing of Erling Haaland could spark a contract free-for-all at Man City.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the figures involved in the 21-year-old’s signing are “bizarre” – and questioned where the Citizens will draw the line in future negotiations.

According to Sky Sports (20 April), Man City are now ready to trigger Haaland’s €75million (£62million) release clause in a bid to bring him to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Reports claim the Norway international could scoop £500,000-a-week if a deal can be completed – making him the Premier League’s highest-paid player.

Phillips claimed Haaland could demand “£700,000-a-week” inside two years – if he proves a successful capture.

He suggested the signing could lead to other City stars asking for improved terms.

“It doesn’t sit well with me,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But unfortunately, that’s the way the Premier League is going. If Man City are willing to pay that, then that’s their decision.

“But where does it stop? If he does well, two years down the line he’s got every right to knock on the door and ask for £700,000-a-week.

“It’s a bizarre amount of money. You can’t blame the player, but it’s just a question of where the line is drawn. The rest of the City players will be asking for new contracts as well now.

“I wouldn’t say they’re nailed on to win the league – but they’ve given themselves a huge advantage, at least.”

It is claimed that Man City’s current high earner is Kevin De Bruyne – who scoops a reported £385,000-a-week.

Haaland has netted 25 goals in 26 games this term.
