Man City news: Pundit verdict on Fernandinho getting extended ban as controversy analysed – ‘they got away with another one’

Man City “got away with another” dubious refereeing decision on Sunday, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Fernandinho was lucky not to be sent off against Aston Villa.

Fernandinho pulled back Watkins when through on goal in the first half of Man City’s 3-2 win over Steven Gerrard’s side at the Etihad on Sunday.

Referee Michael Oliver did not deem the contact as worthy of a foul and VAR official Darren England did not adjudge his colleague to have made a clear and obvious error.

Fernandinho would likely have been shown a straight red for denying a goalscoring opportunity had Oliver penalised him.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the first-half incident, Campbell said: “If he was shown a red I would have understood.

“I have seen them given, put it that way.

“It was one of those ones that could go either way. If it was given I don’t think Fernandinho could have had too many complaints. I have seen red cards given for less. But then again, I have seen worse things not given.

“Perhaps that was another one Man City got away with.”

The victory clinched Man City the Premier League by a solitary point.

Liverpool won 3-1 against Wolves at Anfield but it was not enough to stop Pep Guardiola’s side win a second consecutive league title.
