Man City old boy Des Buckingham contender to be next Cardiff manager – sources

Cardiff City could turn to Oxford United Des Buckingham if they pull the trigger on incumbent manager Erol Bulut, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Welsh club view the 39-year-old as a ‘young progressive manager with a nice attractive style of football’ but will face competition for his signature.

Football Insider revealed (September 17) that Cardiff City are ready to sack Bulut, 49, after overseeing their worst start to a season in 35 years.

Buckingham, who has experience with City Group clubs Melbourne City FC and Mumbai City FC, led Oxford United to an against-the-odds promotion to the Championship last season.

The Englishman is said to be attracting a lot of interest in the Championship and beyond with Oxford currently sat in seventh place.

Bulut and Cardiff currently sit dead last in the Championship table, losing four and drawing one of their opening five league games.

In stark contrast, Buckingham’s side are loving life in the English second-flight despite being touted for relegation, winning three and losing twice.

Oxford United are also joint third-highest goalscorers in the Championship, with nine goals, while Cardiff have only managed to score once.

Buckingham’s side will be hoping to secure their third consecutive win as they take on a struggling Bristol City side on Saturday (September 21).
