Man City open Rodri talks after Real Madrid twist – sources
Man City are in talks with Rodri over the offer of a new contract amid interest from Real Madrid, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Man City are determined to keep hold of the midfielder and will not contemplate a potential exit.
A new contract could see the 28-year-old double his money as City are doing everything they can to keep hold of their main man.
Real Madrid are one of multiple of Europe’s elite clubs who are keeping close tabs on the Spaniard’s situation and are prepared to swoop if contract talks do not progress.
Uncertainty surrounding the future of Pep Guardiola at the Etihad had led to speculation that several of his star players could follow him out of the door.
However, sources say that even if Guardiola leaves when his contract expires next summer, the club’s plans for Rodri will not change.
Man City to offer double-your-money deal to Rodri in bid to beat off Real Madrid interest
Rodri joined Man City in 2019, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of their most important players, making 257 appearances for the club.
During that time, he has played a key role in lifting four Premier League titles, two League Cups, one FA Cup, one Champions League and the Club World Cup.
He also helped Spain to win Euro 2024 over the summer, defeating England in the final.
The midfielder holds a strong personal relationship with Guardiola which led to speculation that he could be tempted to follow him away from the Premier League champions.
Rodri’s current contract does not expire until 2027, but the club are keen to reaffirm their commitment to him as well as to tie down his future at the Etihad.

Real Madrid are considering a move to make Rodri their latest Galactico signing in a deal which would see him return to Madrid, having previously represented Atletico.
Football Insider revealed that they also hold an interest in Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the Reds are holding similar contract talks to keep him at the club.
