Kieran Maguire: Man City 'powerless' amid £840m reveal

Man City have no choice but to pay through the nose for agents – they are an “unavoidable expense in the modern game”.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the money City have dished out to player representives.

Analysis from Football Insider has showed that City spent £30.17m on agents fees last year, second only to Chelsea who spent £35.24m.

Analysis from Off The Pitch published 16 November shows that three player agencies have talent rosters worth more than €1billion, or £840m.

City are, according to the analysis, the only team in the world whose total squad value is greater than that figure.

Fifa are currently exploring various options to curtail the power of player agencies, who they feel have just as much influence as top clubs.

Maguire explains that City have no choice but to shell out for agents when they negotiate new contracts and signings.

“It’s an unavoidable expense in the modern game,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“For most people, the most expensive purchase you’re likely to make is going to be a house and you’re going to do that through an agency.

“Clubs’ most expensive purchases are going to be players. Players are happy to delegate responsibility to negotiate contracts to agents.

“It’s part of the game and a very lucrative part of the game for those agents who are successful. You are powerless to do find any way around it.”
