Man City preparing to land new manager after deal agreed – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted incoming Man City director of football Hugo Viana is preparing to bring in a replacement for Pep Guardiola next summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – backed the Portuguese to do a good job despite only recently becoming involved with the English champions.

Man City confirmed (12 October) the exit of Txiki Begiristain at the end of the 2024-25 campaign with Sporting CP’s Viana set to replace him.

Begiristain joined City in 2012 and oversaw the appointment of Guardiola in 2016.

The legendary manager has insisted he is yet to make up his mind on signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Viana kicks off Man City search amid Amorim links

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has been linked with the City role due to the links with Viana but has recently distanced himself in the media.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is passing the baton.

“We’re talking about Pep possibly going. Viana’s early appointment helps him get settled in, talk to Txiki and get an understanding on potential successors for Pep.

“I think this is part of a changing of the guard.

“But it’ll be well-planned, well-thought-out – and I know they’ll do a good job.

“They’ve got the luxury of time and resources to do that, so you’d expect nothing less.

“I do think Viana will bring some fresh eyes, particularly in the selection of a new manager. He’ll be important.”
