Man City respond to West Ham’s James McAtee interest – sources

Man City are reluctant to let West Ham target James McAtee leave the club in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old has mostly played in domestic cups and European competition this term but City want to keep him amid injury problems in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Sources say the English champions are reluctant to further weaken their squad as they chase a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

West Ham have been linked with a swoop for McAtee, who has less than two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

However, it is understood that the 14-cap England Under-21 international is highly regarded at City despite his lack of first-team action.

McAtee has made six appearances for Guardiola’s side this term, scoring once.

He has started in three outings in the League Cup and Community Shield but could see his opportunities limited in future after City’s elimination against Spurs.

Man City reluctant to sanction McAtee exit

The 22-year-old was a regular for Sheffield United during loan spells in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns.

He helped the Blades gain promotion to the Premier League and was a regular in the top flight as they suffered instant relegation last term.

McAtee made 75 appearances across both campaigns, notching 14 goals and eight assists.

The Salford-born ace primarily features as an attacking midfielder but can also play in a deeper-lying role and on the right flank.
