Man City star Joao Cancelo could be set to agree big-money deal after Spanish news - pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Joao Cancelo could be set to sign a bumper new Man City contract after he closed the door to a potential Real Madrid switch.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old is “one of the best full-backs in the world” and would be deserving of a pay hike.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported on 29 September that Real Madrid are targeting Cancelo as they look to bolster their defensive options.
However, the versatile full-back told the City Magazine (as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, 1 November) that he wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium for “many more years”.
Cancelo signed a five-year contract in January which saw his weekly wage rocket from £80,000 to £250,000 (as per FBRef).
He has contributed two goals and five assists across 19 appearances in all competitions this term.

Whelan insisted it is “important” that City keep their youthful “nucleus” together as they look to challenge for titles over the coming years.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s one of the best full-backs in the world, so it doesn’t surprise me that Real Madrid are sniffing around him.
“He covers everything you’d want from a full-back, and I’m not sure Man City would be able to go out and get a better player than him if he were to leave.
“If anyone deserves more money, it’s him. I’m sure Pep would love to keep him around.
“If that means a new contract, then give him a new contract. When you’ve got one of the best, you do it.
“It would just show the power Man City have if they could keep him under the noses of a club like Real Madrid.
“It’s important they keep this nucleus together now. It’s looking more youthful and they’re still building towards the next three or four seasons.”
