Man City star Phil Foden could be about to agree jaw-dropping deal ahead of January

Phil Foden could become the second highest earning player at Man City if he signs a new contract at the club.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Foden’s wages could match that of Erling Haaland at the Etihad.

Foden is close to signing a new long-term deal at Man City, with his current contract set to expire in 2027.

Man City’s 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace kept up Foden’s fine form recently, with five goals and an assist in his last five games in all competitions.

Phil Foden ‘right up there with Erling Haaland’ with new deal

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes there is “no doubt” that Foden will be at Man City for the long-term.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness is also backing Foden to be in England‘s World Cup squad.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There’s no doubt, I think he will. He’s starting to find some form again. I mean, he was really on the periphery a bit with [Thomas] Tuchel at the start, but I think he is finding his form and I think he will certainly be on the plane.

“Whether he plays, I mean, as we’re just talking about, all those positions are, there’s a lot of competition. But yes, there’s no doubt Foden is going to be long term with Man City. I think we said in the last few weeks that we believe he will be one of the top earners at the Etihad.

If not right up there with Haaland, at least not far away from Haaland anyway. And he is a fan favourite and I think he’s now finding some form. I don’t know what the blip was about.

“There may have been something in his personal life. I’m really not sure. I haven’t got to the bottom of that. But he does show all the signs of becoming another star player. Everybody loves him, and so I think that year we’ll see Phil settle down with a new contract and very happy very soon.”

Man City January plans

Man City may have a quiet January transfer window, unless Pep Guardiola is prepared to sell stars to fund a spending spree.

Savinho, who nearly joined Tottenham in the summer, is one player who Man City could sell if they wanted to be active in the market.

The Brazilian could net Guardiola up to £60million, and the forward has not started any of Man City’s last five matches.
