Finance guru: Man City success 'tainted' as 'dodgy' new business details emerge

The extraordinary success of Man City in the business department is “tainted” by potentially “dodgy” sponsorship arrangements.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest controversy surrounding the Abu Dhabi-owned super club.

City have had commercial success to match their achievements on the pitch in recent years and were football’s biggest revenue generators in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.

But they have also courted controversy with some of their sponsorship arrangements, which some analysts claim are too closely linked to their Middle Eastern owners.

An investigation published by Josimar on Tuesday (20 September) has found that information details surrounding City’s regional partner 8XBet are similarly opaque.

It is understood that the bookmaker, whose staff are untraceable, is run by a PR company from the UAE, where gambling is illegal.

The optics for City once again are not ideal, claim Plumley.

“City have innovated so much over the last few years,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

They have often had first-mover advantage with all these high-tech ideas. There is some really, really good stuff coming out of the club. But when we see this side of things, it does taint the picture.

There is so much going on in the commercial sid eof the club that you run the risk of this happening. It happens in this market with crypto and gambling.

There are still some, shall we say, dodgy areas in these industries around the world. You have to be mindful of that.

With a little bit of digging, it doesn’t look great. However, I dont think it will concern them too much. They will eventually put this one to bed.
