Kieran Maguire: Man City under 'huge scrutiny' as behind-the-scenes sponsorship mystery deepens

It is bizarre that Man City have failed to do the appropriate research into partner 8xBet despite the “huge scrutiny” that their commercial department is under.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest details to emerge from behind the scenes at the shadowy Dubai-based company.

City signed with the online betting platform 8xBet in July but it quickly became apparent that the company had several failings in terms of its transparency.

Stock photographs were used for staff members the firm claimed to be on its payroll, while a number of contradictions and inconsistencies were highlighted in 8xBet’s account of its own company history.

The Daily Mail reported last Saturday (12 November) that multiple new anomalies have now been found, with one source saying that 8xBet has deliberately constructed a fictitious narrative.

City meanwhile remain under investigation by the Premier League for irregularities in their finances.

Maguire was astonished that the reigning top-flight champions, who recently posted record commercial revenues for 2021-22, have failed to do their research on 8xBet.

“It does appear that City have taken the money and done the due diligence after the fact,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It’s poor by the club. They are well aware that they are under huge scrutiny at present.

“After posting record commercial results, it is surprising that a club which is normally so professional in its commercial outlook has made such a schoolboy error.

“They have signed up with an organisation that does not appear on face value to have a background which is particularly stable or indeed visible.”
