Finance guru: Man City want ‘total control’ as talks with overseas media barons revealed

Man City parent company City Football Group’s recent meeting with South American broadcasters would have been focused on taking “total control” of media content across the multi-club network.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how City Football Group could use their South American links to maximise media exposure.

Sources told Football Insider (20 December) that Man City owners City Football Group recently held a summit with South American broadcast chiefs

The exact nature of the meeting is unknown but discussions were likely about the group’s ever-growing links in the continent.

CFG recently expanded their multi-club empire by making Brazilian outfit Bahia the 12th club under their ownership, while they also own Uruguayan Primera Division side Montevideo Torque and are partners with Bolivar, Bolivia’s most successful club.

With a strong foothold in South America, Plumley believes the recent CFG meeting with broadcasters will have been focused on the group taking control of their own media content.

“It fits with the model of Manchester City, doesn’t it?” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams

“And the way in which they commercialise and extract as much value as possible out of that group of clubs.

“I would expect this to be something along the lines of some sort of media rights conversation, but around some of the other stuff first and foremost, such as the Amazon Documentary, All or Nothing.

“I think it might be a case of trying to expand that across the group, and obviously, South America is a hot market for football at the minute.

“That would be my take on it – some sort of media rights package that links the City Football Group together more broadly in that market. And it’s on the club’s own terms so obviously, they can call the shots on the content.

“That’d be my take on how they continue to grow the exposure of the clubs in that model through bespoke TV packets and things that the club can be in total control of.”
