Man City won’t ‘spend big in January’ after £20m blow
Man City are not expected to spend big in the January transfer window despite the positive state of their finances.
That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley who has exclusively told Football Insider why Man City may not be active in the January transfer window.
Man City’s latest financial accounts showed a drop in revenue, with the club making £20million less in 2024-25 than what they did in 2023-24.
Savinho could be sold to fund a January spending spree at Man City, with Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb also potentially departing the Etihad.

Man City not ‘desperate to sell’ in January
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley believes Man City have already laid the groundwork for continued success in previous transfer windows.
“We saw the reports recently, didn’t we? Obviously, we’re a year out of date with those. There’s been a lot of moves since, but there’s no wider concern for Man City’s finances, in general terms if we put it across the board,” Plumley said.
“They did significantly invest in the squad as well in, like 2024-25, so I think that’s going to be a factor in this narrative. Therefore, I wouldn’t expect them to go on a big spending spree in January either way.
“But if they do manage to shift one or two out, and I know Savinho is one that obviously people are talking about at the minute. You might be tempted to dip back into the market and spend some of that money, but if you look at the squad that they’ve got some of the players they’ve got rid of and who they bought in, it does seem to be a squad that is designed for the next development cycle for them.
“There are a lot of younger players in there, and that’s what they seem to be aiming towards. So I think they’ve probably put a lot of that outlay in upfront, which is why you wouldn’t expect to see them spend big in January, maybe not even again in the summer, but notwithstanding that, if you do shift a couple of players on, there’s always a chance to bring players in.
“So they will always be one of their clubs at the minute that, you know, can spend to a relative degree if they want to. But they have had a lot of investment in the squad recently. I wouldn’t see that shifting, but, again, I don’t think they’re desperate to sell either. Their finances are in a pretty good state.”

Man City target Premier League star
Man City could spend up to £65m on Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, amid his likely departure from the Cherries in January.
Semenyo signed a new Bournemouth contract in the summer which included a £65m release clause, with Liverpool also pursuing the 25-year-old.
Bournemouth signed Semenyo for just £10m, with the winger contributing 28 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League since his arrival in 2023.
