Man United an ‘absolute mess’ after ‘disrespectful’ Jesse Lingard and teammate updates – pundit

Man United are in an “absolute mess” and are holding players like Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson to ransom, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Old Trafford club have been “really unfair and unprofessional” when dealing with wantaway stars.

As reported by The Athletic (31 January), midfielder Lingard saw a Man United exit blocked by the club despite manager Ralf Rangnick sanctioning a move.

According to the Manchester Evening News (31 January), the Old Trafford club also put the brakes on a potential deadline day move for goalkeeper Henderson.

Whelan suggested a club of Man United’s stature should “treat their players better”.

He claimed the Red Devils have been “stubborn” with their January window stances.

“Man United have been in an absolute mess during that window,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They’ve held players to ransom – Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson in particular. It’s been really unfair, and really unprofessional from the club.

“You expect a club of that stature to treat their players better and with a bit more respect.

“Lingard would have loved to go out and play football, but they’ve stuck to their guns and been a bit stubborn – even when the manager has said he’s happy to let him go.

“It’s cost them money as well in the process because they were simply holding Newcastle to ransom for a fee they were never going to get.”

Lingard, who was wanted by Newcastle and West Ham, has played just 273 minutes this season.

Henderson has made just two starts for Man United this term.
