Man United are ‘sailing close’ to points deduction – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed Manchester United could be close to a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach if they fail to qualify for the Champions League again this season.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested previous decisions by Old Trafford chiefs are now “coming home to roost”.
Man United agreed a 10-year extension with Adidas last year in a deal believed to be worth up to £900million.
But The Times reported on 1 October the new agreement includes a clause stating the German kit manufacturer will pay United £10million less per year if they are not in the Champions League from next season onwards.
Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a difficult start to the new season as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, while they have drawn both of their opening two Europa League games.
Man United paying for previous decisions after Adidas reveal
Wyness believes missing out on the extra Champions League cash could take United close to the PSR limit, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s just normal part of a contract for these sorts of things.
“If you don’t meet your levels that you’ve put in to get exposure for your sponsor, then you’re going to get a penalty and give them a rebate of some description. That’s quite normal.
“Man United love dealing in big numbers and a reduction of £10million is a big number.
“It won’t help them because they are starting to sail close to PSR in many ways.
“All these things count, and these things come home to roost.

“They are the end sum of all these decisions that have been taken right now.
“There is direct correlation between what happens and the money they get in the bank at the end.”
