‘Man United at breaking point’ – top source drops bombshell after speaking to staff

Man United are rocking on and off the pitch after news of more Sir Jim Ratcliffe redundancies broke earlier last week.

The BBC reported (12 February) that Ratcliffe is considering making between 100 and 200 more redundancies after 250 members of staff were let go last year.

The 72-year-old, who now owns 28.9 per cent of United, has faced intense scrutiny over his attempts to slash costs at Old Trafford.

Man United are performing poorly on the pitch and sit 15th in the Premier League after replacing Erik ten Hag with Ruben Amorim in November.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed the latest from Old Trafford after speaking to staff members he has known for “25 years”.

Man United morale is ‘below rock bottom’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested Man United and other aspects of Ratcliffe’s sporting empire are at breaking point.

Ratcliffe took control of footballing operations after purchasing a minority stake from the Glazer Family in 2024.

Wyness claimed he has seen “so many Man United resumes in the market recently” as the club’s downward trajectory continues.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve spoken to a couple of people I know at United, and the morale is below rock bottom.

“Key people are going, who are the fabric of Man United and I’ve known for the last 25 years.

“I’ve dealt with them, they’re professional, decent and honest.

“It doesn’t make sense when you look at the amount of money saved. It’s a one-time saving, it’s not repeating.

“They also have to be sure they can operate better without these staff.

Man United are struggling on the pitch as well as with off-pitch matters in the 2024-25 campaign.

“That will be hard because the pressure is going to come on. I’ve seen so many Man United resumes in the market recently – they’re fleeing the sinking ship to a great degree.

“They may have had a few overstaffed areas, but it was a well-run club overall. It’s sad to see what’s happening under the Ratcliffe management.

“Everything he touches in his sporting empire, there’s issues.

“Something is going to change with INEOS – or it’s going to break.”

‘Ratcliffe could demand bigger Man United stake’

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (13 February) that Ratcliffe could demand more shares in Man United to help fund the Old Trafford regeneration project.

United’s new stadium plans could cost the club more than £2billion as they will be financially responsible for that part of the project.

The club and a stadium regeneration task force are considering plans to either expand Old Trafford or build a new facility altogether.
