Man United attempt last-gasp Liverpool hijack as transfer deadline day medical booked
Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign talented French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet in a big-money deal from Stade Rennais.
Jacquet has been tracked by Liverpool for some time, with the defender seen as a potential long-term replacement for either Ibrahima Konate or Virgil van Dijk.
The former’s future at Anfield remains clear amid the Reds’ failure to tie him down to a new contract, while the Netherlands international will enter the final year of his own deal this summer.
Chelsea looked to be closing in on Jacquet earlier in the window, but the sides ultimately failed to agree on a fee.
Just days ago, Chelsea were attempting to agree a different type of deal for Jacquet, but Liverpool have stepped in emphatically.

Man United fail with late hijack attempt
Jacquet has been hugely impressive for Stade Rennais this season, with the defender attracting interest from across the continent.
Arsenal had attempted to swoop in with a move for the France youth international in the summer, but their efforts were knocked back by the Ligue 1 club.

Chelsea have now suffered the same fate, with Liverpool closing in on a deal that will see the centre-back arrive in the summer.
The Reds have agreed a fee for Jacquet, reportedly worth up to £60million, and according to Sky Germany, the 20-year-old’s medical will take place in the coming hours.
Sky reports that Man United attempted to hijack the deal, but that their efforts failed as the Frenchman was already in agreement with Liverpool.
Bayern Munich were also interested, but they are awaiting a decision on the future of Dayot Upamecano.
What Stade Rennais’ manager said about Jacquet
Quick, physical and technically superb, it is no surprise that Jacquet was being monitored across Europe.
The 20-year-old is seen among the best young defenders in world football, and Liverpool have undoubtedly secured a future star.
“I believe Jérémy is very important to our objectives, and if he were to leave, we would have to lower those objectives,” said Staid Rennais boss Habib Beye last month. “Because he’s a key player for us, one of the best on our team.”
Liverpool would have liked to see Jacquet arrive in the coming days, given their defensive issues, but they will be extremely happy to have seemingly beaten the competition to the youngster’s signature.
