Man United backed into corner over Lisandro Martinez future, sale could be forced

Manchester United are expected to reassess Lisandro Martinez’s future in the summer.

The Red Devils are going through another huge transitional period in the club’s recent history, and the Argentine could still be a part of a new push for success at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick has restored a positive feeling at Man United, as INEOS continue their search to make a permanent head coach appointment in the summer.

But another decision internal figures will soon need to make is regarding the future of Martinez.

Manchester United to make Lisandro Martinez decision soon with Barcelona lurking

Martinez is highly rated at Man United, and supporters would argue that he is one of the first names on the teamsheet when fit.

The centre-back joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022, and this year could very well be his final one at Old Trafford.

According to Caught Offside’s Mark Brus on X, Barcelona are keeping tabs on Martinez, but talks have yet to commence.

However, United are aware that they may have to sell the defender if he doesn’t agree to a new contract deal soon.

The 28-year-old’s deal expires in 2027, and the Red Devils hold a one-year extension, but the summer could prove the perfect time to cash in.

That, alongside multiple other issues with the centre-back, is why INEOS may truly have to let go of an individual with clear trophy-winning qualities.

The Dilemma that Manchester United have with Martinez

Martinez has suffered from injuries during his time at Man United so far, which is why many fans have been left frustrated and feeling sorry for the defender.

Now fit, he currently plays a part in Carrick‘s two centre-back 4-2-3-1 formation, and seems to be an important player for the former Middlesbrough boss.

But Carrick isn’t guaranteed to get the United job on a permanent basis even if he does exceed expectations, as a new manager could have different thoughts over Martinez.

The centre-half would likely demand a big transfer fee, which a new head coach and INEOS could find appealing to raise funds for a summer spend.

Regardless, a decision will need to be made soon, as if Man United do want to sell Martinez, it surely cannot be any later than the summer.
