Man United backed to sign David de Gea 'upgrade' after 'brilliant' report - expert

Paul Robinson has claimed Man United could sign an “upgrade” on David de Gea in Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Oblak, 29, is “one of the best in Europe” and is a “better all-round” keeper than De Gea, 31.

De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of June next year, although there is the option to extend the deal by 12 months.

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux (14 September), Erik ten Hag has not been convinced by the Spain international.

It is reported that the Red Devils are considering a move for Jan Oblak to replace their number one.

When asked by Football Insider if Oblak would be an upgrade on the current options at Old Trafford, Robinson said: “Oblak is one of the best in Europe and he has been for a while.

“He is a brilliant goalkeeper. Yes, he is helped by the quality of the Atletico Madrid defenders and the way Diego Simeone sets them up but he is still one of the best around. He has been for a long time.

“I am surprised he is not already playing in the Premier League. For me, he is definitely an upgrade on De Gea.

“De Gea had an outstanding season last year and he is a great shot-stopper. But his all-round game has been questioned.

“I think Oblak is better all-round. He gives you more.”
