Man United bombshell points deduction verdict issued by finance expert – ‘I’m worried’

Aston Villa and Man United are two top clubs with concerns about breaking the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this term.

Any breaches carry the potential risk of a points deduction – a fate which Everton and Nottingham Forest suffered in the 2023-24 campaign.

Despite their financial concerns, Villa added more than £11million to their wage bill following their late loan deals for Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi before the 3 February deadline.

Meanwhile, Man United have written to fans warning they are at risk of breaching PSR – and only completed the signing of Patrick Dorgu in January.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has detailed why his old side have a massive advantage over United as both sides bid to avoid breaking the rules.

Man United should be worried about points deduction

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Aston Villa have more sellable assets than Man United.

The Midlands giants have already sold Jhon Duran, Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Jaden Philogene – and others – this term.

Wyness insisted Man United do not have the same level of “bargaining chips”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Aston Villa and Man United are going to be very tight with this season’s PSR.

“Villa, however, are better-equipped to get around it. They’ve shown with Monchi that they can do well in terms of trading out of trouble.

“They did so in the last summer window.

“They’ve also got a quality in the squad that United haven’t got. United haven’t got the bargaining chips to sell.

“They are the one, rather than Villa, that I would be worried about right now.”

Aston Villa to pursue permanent Asensio deal

Former Aston Villa senior scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider (18 February) that the club are already putting plans in place to sign Asensio on a permanent deal.

Unai Emery and Villa’s coaching staff have been impressed with his performances in the early stages of his loan deal and are already leaning towards making the move permanent.

Asensio’s vast experience across some of Europe’s top teams including Real Madrid and PSG is also viewed as a valuable asset to Emery’s side.
