Man United close in on Dan Ashworth agreement – sources
Man United are closing in on the appointment of Dan Ashworth and remain hopeful of securing his arrival this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Red Devils could see a breakthrough in negotiations with Newcastle United in the near future as they prepare to appoint Crystal Palace transfer chief Dougie Freedman as his replacement.
Football Insider revealed on Monday (13 May) that official news on the 49-year-old joining Newcastle could come soon after the end of the 2023-24 campaign – which is just days away.
That deal will pave the way for Ashworth, who was placed on gardening leave in February, to complete his move to Man United under the new INEOS regime.
The two clubs have been embroiled in a row over compensation since he agreed terms with United – and it has been widely reported that Newcastle are demanding up to £20million.
Man United still want Ashworth in place this summer as negotiations continue
But the Magpies are expected to relent in negotiations and accept a lower fee for the transfer guru.
Ashworth’s contract at St James’ Park is set to run until June 2026.
Man United are keen to have him in place for the summer transfer window as they plot a radical overhaul of the squad in the off-season.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (11 May) that manager Erik ten Hag is set to be sacked by at the end of the season after a disastrous 2023-24 campaign.

The Red Devils sit eighth in the Premier League and were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage.
Ten Hag has the opportunity to win the second trophy of his reign when United face rivals Man City in the FA Cup final on 25 May.
