Man United could agree £50m-a-year naming rights deal – Stefan Borson

Manchester United could bring in more than £50million a year if they can land a stadium naming rights deal.

That is the view of former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider a deal of that magnitude might not be easy to find after Tottenham have struggled to sell the rights for their new stadium.

The Athletic reported Man United are considering selling the naming rights to a refurbished Old Trafford or a newly-built stadium.

It comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking to drive up the Premier League giants’ revenues after securing a 27.7 per cent stake in the club for £1.25billion earlier this year.

Manchester City currently earn the most in the Premier League from naming rights as Etihad Airways pays around £15million to sponsor their stadium as part of the Abu Dhabi airline’s £80million annual contribution to the club.

Barcelona’s stadium naming rights and kit sponsorship deal with Spotify is by far the biggest in football, with the streaming company paying the La Liga giants £236million over four years.

Man United could face similar naming rights issues to Tottenham

Borson warned there aren’t too many people willing to pay a large amount of money for naming rights deals after the issues Spurs have faced in recent years.

“In theory, it could be worth £50million a year or more for Man United,” Borson told Football Insider.

“But in reality, there are loads of people who are trying to sell naming rights.

“Spurs have been trying to sell naming rights for the new stadium for four years or even longer.

“That’s a brand-new stadium in central London with lots of alternative use and it would be a first-time sponsor.

“You would have thought that it would be very attractive, but they have not been able to get the amount they want.

Man United

“I think they are probably looking for about £50million a year over 10 years in a £500million deal.

“There are just not that many people who are in the market for a £500million naming rights deal.”
