Man United could come unstuck after latest ‘drama – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Man United could come undone against Championship teams in future FA Cup ties due to the former playing a weakened team.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Championship clubs are strong enough to beat Premier League clubs in the competition.
The verdict comes after Coventry reached the semi-finals of this season’s competition, narrowly losing out to the Red Devils.
The Manchester giants beat the Championship club on penalties at Wembley on Sunday (21 April) after a 3-3 draw.
Championship clubs can overcome Man United in FA Cup
Wyness believes the beauty of the FA Cup can stay alive despite the scrapping of replays from next season onwards.
The decision was taken solely by the FA and Premier League, a direction that Wyness believes is becoming increasingly commonplace.
“That’s the way it’s been going recently,” he told the Inside Track podcast. “We all want to see those giant killers, that’s the beauty of the FA Cup.
“That’s when you hope that the rainy Wednesday night in Macclesfield is when Man United will come undone.
“I went to watch local club Tranmere a couple of seasons ago against Wolves and against Man United, it was great to see the stadium absolutely packed and the team trying hard.
“That is the beauty of the FA Cup, so we have to hope that those things can happen. And with Premier League clubs starting to play second teams and third teams in the FA Cup, those chances will happen.
“Coventry got to the semi-final this season, it’s fantastic. Championship clubs now are strong enough to be able to challenge, certainly on a one-off game.

“We have to keep hoping that is the beauty we will see in the coming seasons because it gets everybody’s imagination going, it was great drama.”
