‘Man United could face devastating PSR blow after confirmed news’

Manchester United are continuing to face problems on and off the field as they aim to return to their former glory.

The Premier League side have endured a challenging season as they currently sit 13th in the top-flight table heading into the final seven games of the campaign.

Man United are at risk of failing to qualify for European football unless they can win the Europa League next month.

Ruben Amorim’s side drew 2-2 with Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday (10 April), with the second leg taking place at Old Trafford next week.

United could be forced to make further cuts if they miss out on a return to the Champions League as the competition is worth up to £100million in revenue for the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already come under fire in recent months following his cost-cutting measures, which have included staff redundancies, charity cuts and halting benefits for ex-players.

Man United close to PSR breach

There have been plenty of questions asked about United’s financial situation as they remain more than £1billion in debt despite announcing plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium.

Old Trafford chiefs sent a letter to fan groups in January warning them the club are at risk of breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with top-flight sides only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million in 2023-24, but they recorded a net loss of £113.2million.

The Manchester giants have confirmed they will travel to Asia at the end of May for their first-ever post-season tour.

They will take on ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 28 May – three days after the Premier League season ends – and Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium on 30 May.

The tour, which is expected to generate around £8million in revenue for the club, suggests they still have PSR issues heading into the final few weeks of the campaign.

Although Tottenham and Newcastle United both went on a post-season tour last summer, there is little reason for Amorim’s side to head to Asia just days after their final fixture against Aston Villa if they didn’t need the money.

United would likely have breached the PSR rules last season had they not been allowed to add back £40million in Covid losses and more than £30million for their strategic review.

The club have admitted they are close to the spending limit, but perhaps the £8million from the post-season tour – coupled with the potential extra European revenue if they make it past Lyon – will see them over the line.

Kobbie Mainoo could agree Man United exit

There has been plenty of speculation around the futures of academy products Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho in recent months.

The duo were both linked with a move away in January given the club’s PSR issues, with their potential sales worth a pure profit.

United would prefer to sell Mainoo abroad if he decides to leave Old Trafford following his recent contract stand-off.

The 19-year-old has missed the past couple of months with a muscle injury, but he came off the bench in the draw against Lyon.

Meanwhile, Garnacho appears to be in Amorim’s plans after the 20-year-old has nailed down a regular starting spot in recent weeks.
