Man United cut-price fire sale beckons – boardroom source

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Man United could be forced to take big losses on some of Erik ten Hag’s signings.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs and their boardrooms – insisted Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ownership at Old Trafford has been a “very expensive exercise” so far.

Ten Hag was sacked on Monday (28 October) and all signs now point to the appointment of Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim to replace him.

The Dutchman brought in a lot of familiar faces during his time at United – signing Andre Onana, Matthijs De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Noussair Mazraoui after their time together at Ajax.

Netherlands internationals Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia were also brought to Old Trafford during Ten Hag’s reign.

Two players who will be known to Amorim are Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes, who worked with him at Sporting.

Ten Hag signings could leave Man United for cut-price fees, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This will be a very expensive exercise for Jim Ratcliffe.

“I’ve been highly critical of the way INEOS have not only invested in Dutch and Dutch-based players as well as Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

“It isn’t just the severance payments for the manager, it’s also the staff.

“There may also be players they have to get rid of at a much lower cost.

“It’s going to be a really big number and it’s going to bring them closer to the PSR limit.”
