Man United deal to sign left-back ‘likely to get done’ after talks today
Man United are stepping up their efforts to sign a new left-back in the closing stages of the transfer window, according to their former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that talks have taken place with Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu on Wednesday.
Football Insider revealed in November that United had joined Chelsea and Tottenham in the race to sign the 20-year-old after being impressed by his displays in Serie A.
Now, they are making progress towards his arrival, as a left-back has become their number-one target before the window closes on 3 February.
Brown explained that United have also been looking at Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez this month, while Liverpool have also been impressed by his displays.
However, Dorgu has emerged as Ruben Amorim’s top target for the position and the deal is now gathering pace.
Man United deal to sign Patrick Dorgu accelerates
Dorgu has become one of the most highly-rated young left-backs in Europe after making 23 appearances for Lecce, while he has also represented Denmark four times.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked as the chief scout for Blackburn and Sunderland, insisted United are working hard on a deal to sign a new left-back before the window closes.
“Man United have been looking at Kerkez,” he told Football Insider.
“And they should be looking at those types of players, it would be a surprise if they weren’t.
“He’s giving a top level of performance every time you see him, and I think Liverpool are one of the clubs looking at him as well.
“Man United have to assess what Luke Shaw’s situation is, and if he’s not part of their plans, they’ve got to decide who they want as their left-back.
“Malacia has done alright, but he’s not the answer to their questions.
“The Bournemouth lad is a candidate, but they’ve been in talks over signing this left-back from Italy [Patrick Dorgu], and they’d like to get that done.

“Whichever option they decide, they want to have a new left-back in before the window closes because it’s certainly an area they want to strengthen.”
