Man United 'desperate' to sign Christopher Nkunku after £64m+ update - pundit

Man United are “desperate” for players this summer and may have to pay over the odds for Christopher Nkunku, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker revealed he “really likes” Nkunku and his speed means he is exactly the sort of player Man United need.

Fabrizio Romano reported in Caught Offside on Monday (9 May) that United are one of a number of clubs interested in RB Leipzig’s 24-year-old striker.

It is claimed RB Leipzig have no interest in selling him and will instead open talks over a new contract with a €75million release clause, around £64.1million.

“They need to [get a striker in],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I do really like Nkunku, he’s quick, sharp and can score any type of goal. He does look like the sort of player they need.

“Man United need to be careful with the amount of money they spend on players. They don’t want to pay over the odds because they are desperate but they could be in that situation where they have to.

“They should get it done early but Erik ten Hag will come in and think ‘I’ve got Rashford and Sancho here, two of England’s top stars, I need to get them playing to the maximum’.

“The board will be saying they have top players, he needs to get the best out of them.”

Nkunku has scored 34 times and provided 19 assists in 49 games across all competitions for Leipzig this term.

The France international scored his side’s goal as they lost 3-1 to Rangers at Ibrox in the Europa League semi-final last week (5 May).
