Man United face transfer blow after ‘huge’ Jadon Sancho ‘mistake’

Manchester United are facing a Jadon Sancho transfer blow after signing him has proven to be a “huge mistake” at Old Trafford.

Sancho has rejected a move to Roma despite reports Man United were prepared to sell him for around £20million.

The 25-year-old, who is out of contract in June 2026, returned to Old Trafford this summer after Chelsea decided against signing him permanently following his loan spell at Stamford Bridge last season.

Sancho is believed to be on around £300,000 a week with Ruben Amorim’s side, with interested parties struggling to meet his wage demands.

However, former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Man United are confident of agreeing a transfer for Sancho before the window closes on 1 September.

Man United set for financial blow after Jadon Sancho update

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen CEO.

Football Insider revealed on 17 August Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho must leave Man United before they can move for their ambitious targets.

It comes after the 20-time English champions have been priced out of a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with the Seagulls reluctant to sell him this late in the window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “The Sancho situation is a symptom of Man United’s spending spree previously that’s coming home to roost with the valuations and the wages they were paying before and that’s just the legacy and the hangover that they’ve got right now.

“They’re having to clean up. They’re probably going to take the view that they’re going to have to take a cut at Man United.

“They’re going to have to take some pain and really start fresh with this new group that they’re buying this season.

“It’s a lot to say you’ve got to give up the last two or three seasons, but I’m afraid that’s the medicine they’re going to have to take because it’s been a huge mistake.

“They’re better off without Sancho at the club.

“I think they’re better off keeping that fresh feeling that they’re trying to instil of a new broom sweeping clean throughout the club, a new Carrington.

“The new feeling internally they’re trying to build. That all comes with cleaning out some of the players that they’ve already got there.

“United’s going to have to take the hit.”

Ruben Amorim has told Man United star to leave

In terms of other transfer activity, Amorim has told Rasmus Hojlund he can leave Man United after he was not included in the squad for their opening-day defeat against Arsenal.

The Denmark international recently confessed he wanted to fight for his place at Old Trafford, but an exit is currently the most likely outcome.

Hojlund has largely failed to impress for Man United since joining in a £72million deal from Atalanta in 2023, registering 26 goals and six assists in 95 appearances over the past two years.
