Man United fans all say the same thing about Andre Onana as he heads out

Andre Onana is set to leave Manchester United with another dismal display under his belt after Cameroon’s defeat to Cape Verde.

Man United will be without Onana for the rest of the season after they agreed a deal to send the 29-year-old on loan to Trabzonspor, albeit the Turkish SuperLig side don’t have an obligation to buy Onana.

Onana has had a “horrendous” spell at Old Trafford after his arrival from Inter for £43.8million in 2023, and a series of error-strewn performances have culminated in his exit outside the UK transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 9 September that Man United want to sell Onana permanently next summer after he returns from Trabzonspor, but those plans are dependent on performances which haven’t been seen in his two years with the Red Devils.

Andre Onana costs Cameroon in World Cup qualifying defeat

Onana has fallen to third in the goalkeeping pecking order at Old Trafford after Senne Lammens‘ arrival, but Man United have been urged to learn from their mistakes to ensure the Belgian becomes a success.

Lammens and Altay Bayindir have superceded Onana and cleared the path for his move to Trabzonspor, but the Turkish side look set to welcome him off the back of another costly error on international duty.

Cameroon missed the chance to move to the top of their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with a 1-0 loss to Cape Verde on Tuesday, as the African island nation opened up a four-point gap at the summit.

Dailon Livramento’s second-half winner saw him brush United transfer target Carlos Baleba off the ball before running 50 yards to score, as Onana remained rooted to his goal-line and was still wrong-footed.

‘Strikers will miss you’ – Man United fans wave goodbye to Onana

Onana’s unceremonious departure has been seen as sad in some corners, but most Man United fans are instead glad to see the back of a goalkeeper who has provided the direct opposite of a highlights reel.

Cameroon’s midfield and defence may have been opened up with ease by Livramento to suffer a costly defeat, but Onana did little to help his team-mates out by remaining rooted to his line until the very last.

Man United fans on social media reacted with glee to Onana’s imminent exit as a result, with one sharing a gif to say “free at last”, and others looking forward to pressure being taken off Ruben Amorim‘s side.

Another supported argued that while the 29-year-old will be missed, it’s only opposition strikers who will be disappointed not to be coming up against Onana between the sticks for Man United this season.
