Man United fans could revolt after latest transfer development – pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested the discontent among Man United fans could spill over into more “protests” if the club’s owners fail to “spend big” this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed new boss Erik ten Hag will be under no illusions about the changes needed at Old Trafford.
The Man United first-teamers returned to training on Monday (27 June) but are yet to be joined by any summer additions – despite releasing six stars at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
Red Devils chief executive Richard Arnold headed off a fan protest by meeting supporters in a nearby pub last week (18 June) – and was filmed admitting the club had “burned” almost £1billion in transfer fees.
A number of protests against the Glazer family ownership were held during the 2021/22 campaign – including at home games and at the training ground.
Whelan backed discontent to “grow and grow” if Ten Hag doesn’t receive adequate backing this summer.
“I don’t think any Man United fan or Ten Hag is under any illusions about how much they need to spend,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They have to spend big this summer. The owners are going to have to put up the funds to really turn this team around.
“I don’t know how much longer the Man United supporters will put up with this. They’ll get behind the new manager, but there’ll be shut-outs and all sorts of protests.
“Everything we saw last season in terms of that discontent will just grow and grow.”

Football Insider revealed on Monday (27 June) that Man United are in advanced talks to sign Frenkie de Jong and an agreement is expected in the next 48 hours.
The Premier League giants and Barcelona are close to agreeing a “huge” deal worth £64.4million in total.
