Man United fans will be ‘disappointed’ after journalist’s ‘surprising’ Anthony Martial update – pundit

Paul Robinson is “surprised” Man United manager Erik ten Hag is going to keep Anthony Martial this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed Martial, 26, has proven to be “unreliable” in recent seasons.

Martial has starred for the Red Devils in pre-season, with three goals to his name in four appearances.

According to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell (21 July), such performances have led the club to U-turn on the striker’s future.

The Frenchman was said to be available for transfer this summer but his displays in matches and training have convinced Ten Hag he must stay.

When asked by Football Insider if the right decision had been taken when Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncertain future is considered, Robinson said: “That surprises me.

“Martial has had his chances in the first team and the Premier League.

“Let’s be honest, pre-season games are very different to actual games. They are played at a very different tempo. The importance of games is very different.

“Man United have a big couple of weeks ahead before the season starts and the window closes. The need to address Ronaldo’s future and they need to sign a number nine.

“Yes, Martial has had a good pre-season. He has started well. But he has had his chance.

“He has proved that he can’t be relied on over the last few seasons.

“I’m sure United fans would be disappointed if Ten Hag decided to go with Martial as their number nine next year.”
