Kieran Maguire: Man United fans will love ‘sugar daddy’ takeover news from Dubai

Man United would love for a “sugar daddy-style” owner to take over from the Glazers and spend big on new signings.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of regime change at Old Trafford.

The Glazer family are deeply unpopular among bedrock United fans and protests have intensified at the start of 2022-23.

Per the Daily Mail last Sunday (4 September), the American group could sell the Red Devils if they receive an offer in the region of £3.75billion.

It is claimed that Dubai’s sovereign wealth fund could be tempted to break the bank to take control, while Britain’s richest man Jim Ratcliffe has also been mooted as a potential buyer.

Maguire explained how a sugar daddy owner’s approach would differ from that of the Glazers, who take regular dividends from the club purse.

“There’s zero evidence that United are subject to a bid at this stage,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“But if there is one, there is no doubt that United fans would prefer a sugar daddy-type owner to one who is looking at the club as a traditional investment.

“If there was a Dubai-based backer, you can imagine the excitement from the fans’ perspective. They want to be indulged in terms of transfer spending.

“It has to be noted, however, that United have spent just as much or more money on a net basis over the course if the last decade than anyone else in the Premier League.

“It’s a case of spending well rather than spending just for the sake of it that has been at the root of the club’s problems.”
