Man United fans will ‘not be happy’ after Gareth Southgate development – pundit

Man United fans will “not be happy” if the club appoint Gareth Southgate as manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed the England boss was a “hopeless” club manager and is not fit to take the reigns as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

Sources have told Football Insider (23 March) that Southgate is not top of the Red Devils’ target list and they would not want to wait for him to conclude his business with England this summer if they were to make a change in the dugout.

The former Middlesbrough boss dismissed links to a switch to Old Trafford and claimed it was “disrespectful” to speculate while ten Hag was still at the club, but he continues to be linked with a move.

However, McAvennie was adamant that fans would not like Southgate’s defensive-minded style of play and was unconvinced by his record as England manager.

“Fans would not be happy if he came in,” he told Football Insider.

“That’s not the kind of club that Man United are.

“It was like when David Moyes was there – fans didn’t like it because of his defensive play.

“He didn’t last long.

“There is a lot of debate about how good Southgate is, but he was hopeless when he was a club manager.

“He’s now gone to England, but how has he not won anything if he’s got a team like that?

“They have great players and they should have won something by now.

“He did well to get to the World Cup semi-final and the Euros final, but he should have won that.

“It was no one else’s fault but his that England lost [the final].

“He’s just so negative and I can’t see him going to Man United.

“He is not what Man United need.”
