Man United ‘fear’ Newcastle and Aston Villa – Kieran Maguire
Man United voted against anchoring rules as they are scared of facing extra competition from clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Premier League clubs cannot complain that new rules will make them weaker in Europe.
Top flight clubs voted on Monday (29 April) to introduce new anchoring rules which will implement a hard spending cap.
The spending cap will be decided as a multiple of the lowest earnings in the division.
Only three clubs voted against the proposal during Monday’s meeting – Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
It is understood that the two Manchester clubs complained that the new regulations could harm English clubs being competitive in Europe.
Man United fear Newcastle competition under new rules
However, Maguire explained that United were likely fearful of facing extra competition from ambitious clubs such as Newcastle.
“The opposition of some clubs such as Manchester United to the anchoring rules seems somewhat strange,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Based on last year’s figures with Southampton, Premier League clubs could still be allowed to spend over £600million each season.
“That is very competitive with the rest of Europe.

“Clubs from La Liga have their own cost control rules, and yet it doesn’t stop Real Madrid or Barcelona from competing in Europe.
“So I think these reservations that the bigger clubs like Man United have are far more to do with their fear of extra competition from ambitious clubs such as Newcastle and Villa.“
