Man United ‘fear points deduction from what I hear’ – Insider

Man United chiefs are fearful they could suffer a points deduction as a result of excessive spending, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that United are keen not to suffer the same fate as Everton and Nottingham Forest.

The Toffees were deducted a total of eight points last season, while Forest had two points removed, in both cases for breaches of financial rules.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider on 10 November that United will be close to the profit and sustainability limit after their recent outlay.

The decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag is said to have cost around £17million, before they paid Amorim’s £8.3million release clause to buy him out of Sporting CP.

This, it is said, has impacted United’s ability to spend as the club are keen to ensure they don’t fall on the wrong side of the rules.

Newcastle have also struggled with PSR in recent transfer windows and have seen their own spending powers limited, leading to Man United’s cautious approach.

Man United worried about possible points deduction in devastating PSR twist

Brown previously told Football Insider that United’s spending powers have been heavily impacted by the money spent on the decisions to sack Erik ten Hag and bring in Ruben Amorim.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in player recruitment at the top level including spells at West Ham, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, insisted that Amorim is aware of the situation and will work with the players already at the club.

The club have to balance their plans against FFP and PSR,” he told Football Insider.

“We know Newcastle have had their hands tied, the likes of Aston Villa and Everton have also been limited by it recently.

“Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points last year, so that’s something they need to steer clear of.

“From what I hear, United are fearful they could fall into that same bracket.

“I’m not quite sure where that leaves them, but I’d expect their business to be limited in January.

“Amorim will be aware of that, though, and will have to work within his means and use the players he already has at his disposal.”
