Man United get fresh Joao Gomes boost as agent intentions clear amid Wolves exit latest

Manchester United have just seen their hopes of signing Joao Gomes this summer grow even stronger.

The Wolves midfielder has been a standout performer for the Premier League’s bottom club throughout 2025-26, but his future at Molineux is under serious scrutiny with his team’s relegation to the Championship surely inevitable.

Rob Edwards’ side are marooned at the foot of the table and now find themselves 18 points adrift of safety, and several of their key players are attracting heavy interest from elsewhere.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Gomes in the January window, and while the Brazilian ultimately stayed put in the Black Country on that occasion, it looks set to be a different story in the summer.

Brazilian move now off the cards for Joao Gomes

Wolves have also faced interest in the likes of Tolu Arokodare and starlet Mateus Mane in recent months, as clubs from elsewhere prepare to try and take advantage of their imminent relegation.

Gomes has become a key performer for them since his move from Flamengo in January 2023, and that has recently prompted suggestions that he could be about to return to his homeland this summer.

However, it has now become clear that the 25-year-old’s agents have “no intention” of trying to facilitate that move, according to journalist Julio Miguel Neto via his X account, and that plays perfectly into United’s hands.

A move to either Old Trafford or Napoli now appears to be the more likely outcome for the Wolves star, who will surely be desperate to avoid playing second-tier football next term.

United are still likely to face strong competition from the Serie A giants, but with the potential lure of a return to his former club now off the table for Gomes, the Red Devils have received a welcome boost in their pursuit.

How much would Man United have to pay for Joao Gomes?

Football Insider revealed at the end of November that United would need to pay £50million to secure Gomes’ signature in the January transfer window, but it now seems inevitable that there will be a significant reduction in that valuation.

Wolves would likely have used that price tag as a way of trying to deter the interest from Old Trafford and elsewhere in the middle of the season, given that at that stage, they would still have had hope of beating the drop.

Gomes is tied down to a long-term contract at Molineux, but they will need cash to try and rebuild and regroup next term, and they are surely in no position to be able to demand big money for the midfield star.

United should be looking to take advantage of the dire situation facing Edwards and Co., and attempt to do a deal for a fee in the region of the £30m mark.

Gomes’ entourage will be trying to find an exit for their client any way they can, and player power could potentially force Wolves into accepting a much lower fee than they would initially have expected.
