Man United have ‘£100m’ hole in their accounts – Stefan Borson
Manchester United are going to have a £100million hole in their accounts after failing to qualify for the Champions League this season.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United are a club that’s built on the assumption they are going to qualify for European football’s premier competition every season.
The Manchester giants missed out on Champions League football last season after finishing eighth in the Premier League table.
But United’s FA Cup final victory over Man City ensured they will be playing in the Europa League this season.
Erik ten Hag will be hoping his side can secure Champions League qualification for next season, but their campaign hasn’t got off to an ideal start after winning just one of their opening three league games.
Man United will earn less from Europa League victory
Borson revealed United would likely earn less from winning the Europa League this season than they would from just competing in the Champions League.
“Success is sort of irrelevant in many ways in the United equation,” Borson told Football Insider.
“Despite what Ten Hag talks about, it’s not about winning a Carabao Cup or an FA Cup. Those things from a financial perspective are largely irrelevant.
“It’s about Champions League, especially now. For a club like United, Champions League because they should get out of the league stage and into the knockout phase should be worth close to £100million.
“That’s what they need and it makes all the difference. You pay a bit more in wages because a lot of these players have got Champions League clauses.
“But that £100million is something that they really need in their accounts every year. United is a club that is built on the assumption that they will be in the Champions League.

“All of the cost base and infrastructure around the club is based on Champions League football and, if you don’t have it, you have a very big hole.
“That applies even if they win the Europa League because, even if they win that, it’s not going to be worth anywhere near £100million.”
