Man United have given Erik ten Hag a 'massive boost' as new hire close - pundit

Erik ten Hag has been given a “massive boost” by Man United with Steve McClaren reportedly set to join his staff at Old Trafford.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the ongoing changes at the club.

On Friday (13 May), The Guardian reported McClaren, 61, is set to be named as part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

McClaren was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Man United between 1999 and 2001, an incredibly successful period for the club.

McAvennie claims fans should be happy with the appointment.

“What did they used to call him? Wolly with a brolly? I bet the fans are thrilled,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“In all seriousness, that’s a massive boost for Ten Hag because it shows the club are going to listen to him.

“He needs to have complete control if he is going to make anything decent out of that club.

“McClaren is clearly a good coach as well. I know it hasn’t really worked out for him as a manager.

“Ferguson clearly trusted him and that should be good enough for a lot of the fans.

“It’s not a glamourous name but it’s one that is significantly better than what Man United currently have.”

McClaren has had spells as a manager at clubs such as Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Derby County and FC Twente, where he worked with Ten Hag.

He also managed England between 2006 and 2007.
