Kieran Maguire: Man United have ‘messed up’ amid Tom Keane talks reveal

Man United know they have “messed up” in the recruitment department in recent years – someone needs to rein in their spending.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ habit of misfiring when it comes to new signings.

The Daily Mail reported last Thursday (23 June) that Tom Keane is in talks to fill the position vacated by Matt Judge as the club’s chief transfer negotiator.

It is understood that he will work closely alongside director of football John Murtough to help thrash out the finances surrounding new signings and contracts.

The legal professional, who is the brother of Wigan striker Will and Everton defender Michael, will work for the club on a temporary basis during the summer transfer window.

United have spent at an extraordinary rate in the last decade but have very little in the way of major silverware to show for it.

Maguire insists that fresh blood in the negotiating department can only be a good thing.

“Given that the club has spent £1.45bn since Sir Alex retired, I think this is a good idea,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“They have spent over £100m every single year since he left. There has been significant investment but on a qualitative basis, that has been fairly mediocre.

“Arnold admitted they have messed up. It’s an area the club needs to address. I think this is definitely an area where there is room for improvement.

“They need to shift away from the commercial division and remind themselves that they are meant to be a football club.”
