Man United have paid out ‘£100m’ in compensation after high-profile exits

Ruben Amorim is continuing to face questions over his future at Manchester United following a difficult year in charge.

Amorim was drafted in to replace Erik ten Hag last November, but he has largely struggled to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Man United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland eased some of the pressure ahead of the upcoming international break, with the goals coming from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

However, former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Amorim’s “negativity” is impacting his Man United stars as questions continue to be asked about his position.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man United’s severance payments have increased over the past decade.

Man United risk emerges after manager sackings

Borson previously told Football Insider Man United would have to pay Amorim £10million if they were to sack him.

The Manchester giants will likely want to avoid making that payment due to the amount of compensation they have paid out in recent years.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “If you were to go back and look at the exceptional payments line in Manchester United’s accounts over the last 10 years, it stands out that they’ve had a problem with compensation off to management teams.

“Clearly, if you can avoid that exceptional cost every year, that’s what you obviously want to do. Now, clearly where something is an exceptional cost every year, it ceases to be an exceptional cost.

“I think United are at risk of a situation where because it’s sort of happening where every other season there’s a danger that it’s not that exceptional.”

Man United have had six permanent managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford in 2013.

Man United’s latest termination fees revealed

Borson revealed Man United have paid up to £100m in compensation over the past decade.

“If you were to have a look, for example, at the severance payments that United had paid out of those exceptional costs over the last 10 years, it’s almost £100m,” said Borson.

“That started off with a very modest fee to pay out Ferguson’s coaching staff, Moyes surprisingly given that he left after months of a six-year contract seems that he had very fixed early termination costs, so that was £5m. Van Gaal was £8m, Mourinho is £20m, Solskjaer and Rangnick was £24m.

“Then the combination of Richard Arnold, the coaching staff, Ten Hag, Amorim joining and Ashworth, all of that was £37m spread across two years, so these numbers are really very significant. You are talking about £100m over 10 years.”

Man United released their latest accounts for 2024-25 last month, revealing their turnover increased from £661.8m to £666.5m.
