Sources: Man United hold Super League talks ahead of early-2023 announcement

Man United held talks with the organisers of the Super League in October, sources have told Football Insider.

The specific nature of the discussion is not known, but the Glazers announced that they were seeking external investment in the club just a few weeks later.

The Super League itself was then dealt a potentially fatal blow earlier this month when the European Court of Justice preliminarily ruled that UEFA and FIFA are entitled to sanction clubs that join rebel competitions.

However, A22 Sports Management, the firm tasked with relaunching the Super League, claim they are confident of a positive decision when the court’s full verdict is delivered in early 2023

In the same statement, which was sent to Football Insider last Thursday (15 December), A22 revealed that they had met with “a comprehensive group of football stakeholders in October 2022.”

A source has now told this site that United representatives were among those to engage with the Super League, the breakaway competition in which they remain a shareholder.

It is not known which, if any, of the five other Premier League clubs that signed up for the project in April last year decided to take part in the talks.

The pending introduction of an independent regulator for English football means that it is increasingly unlikely that Premier League clubs would be able to join a revised Super League.

Man United

Some analysts suggest this is the reason the Glazers are now willing to relinquish control of United, either through a partial sale or a complete buyout.

Consortiums from the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have all been linked with a deal to take over from the deeply unpopular American family.
